The Landscape Design Process
INITIAL CONSULTATION AND CLIENT QUESTIONNAIRE
Designing your garden begins with a free initial consultation meeting and completing a client questionnaire that allows me to understand your vision for your outdoor space. This meeting allows us to get to know each other as design is a highly collaborative process. This is also an important first step for clients to consider all aspects of their lifestyle, site and design style preferences. The goal would be to have a clear idea of the design direction in order for me to develop a proposal and preliminary concept.
THE PROPOSAL
After the initial consultation, I will submit a proposal that outlines the scope of services and associated fees based on the complexity of the project. Your acceptance of the proposal leads to the next step of the project-- the site assessment.
SITE SURVEY & ANALYSIS
I will review and analyze the site, take measurements, locate existing plants and features, note lighting conditions & microclimates, problem areas (i.e. drainage, noise, privacy issues), and take inventory of existing plants. This information will be needed to create a base map. I will do a walk-through with you to further discuss in detail each area's requirements, which plants we may want to keep and which to replace, how your home interiors relate to the exterior in terms of views and access. All these elements will be important for space planning and for the selection of appropriate plants and hardscape materials.
PRELIMINARY CONCEPT DESIGN
My creative process starts with making sketches of ideas I have for your property based on the design direction established during our initial meetings. I will draw colored perspective sketches and prepare a photo mood board to show the design intent. This is the best opportunity for design interaction between client and designer. (I invite all family members & interested parties to join the presentation). This is the time to gather feedback, try out alternative solutions and agree on a design direction so that the concept can be further developed into a final layout and planting plan.
FINAL DESIGN & PLANTING PLAN
The final master plan will be prepared based on the feedback gathered from the concept stage. These drawings can either be hand-drawn or using CAD software, based on client preference and designer discretion. Final plant selections will be made and a plant list will be compiled for your reference. Colored perspective sketches of the design will be prepared for better communication with the client, designer, and the selected contractor during the installation stage.
YOUR COMPLETE DESIGN PACKAGE
Your complete design package will include 2 copies of the Final Master Plan drawn to scale and a copy of the colored perspective sketch drawings. It will also have a plant list showing quantity, suggested size, with a photo and care instructions of the selected plants. General installation instructions to the client or contractor will also be included.
FOLLOW UP SERVICES
Once the design is finalized, I can recommend contractors who can quote for and eventually install the final design. Should you wish to install the design yourself, I can also help with plant sourcing & coordination, selection of furniture & garden accents at a reasonable hourly rate. I will also be available to place plants during planting day and answer questions the contractor might have to ensure that the design vision we have come up with will be followed and become a reality!
